Three Injured, One in Critical Condition, in Collapse of Former Power Plant in South Boston.
In a dramatic incident, a structural collapse at an old power plant in South Boston left three people injured, one of them with life-threatening injuries. The tragedy unfolded at the former Edison power plant, triggering an immediate response from the police, firefighters, and Boston’s medical emergency teams.
The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. when a “structural collapse” at the power plant led to the collapse, trapping three people, one of whom suffered potentially fatal injuries. Emergency teams conducted a technical rescue, deploying around 100 firefighters in the operation.
Boston Fire Commissioner Jack Dempsey reported that two people were evacuated immediately, while the third victim was trapped under a 30-foot section of the collapsed walkway. After an intense rescue operation, they managed to free the worker, who was promptly transported to a hospital with critical injuries.
Although the man’s identity has not been publicly disclosed, his uncle, José Estrella, mentioned that he was conscious during the rescue. Estrella, also a worker at the project site, was alerted by his coworkers when his nephew became trapped under the debris.
Tom Troy, retired business manager of Building Wreckers Local 1421, a construction workers’ union, was present at the site before the victims were rushed to the hospital. Troy recounted that they were working when something fell on their coworkers.
Boston EMS Deputy Superintendent Steven McHugh expressed optimism, stating that he believes all rescued individuals will survive. Mayor Michelle Wu praised the rescue teams, describing the rescue of the third victim as “almost a miracle”.
The building in question was in the process of demolition at the time of the collapse, and this incident has left construction workers at the site shocked.
